This morning in my devotional time I did a great deal of thinking about a verse that I read, and then a friend and I talked about it over a cup of coffee.  The verse was Luke 9:24:  "Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it."  It is so easy to cling to earthly things, people, ideas, jobs and use them to define our lives.  These all may be good things, but  if I cling to them as though they were things I must have to be "who I am", then it seems this is saying they are more important than the God in whom I trust.  Am I willing to let them go?  I couldn't help but think about Job (I read that book this week), and how he was stripped of everything.  He didn't understand, but he continued to believe in God. My desire is to cling to God more than other "things"--a real challenge.

Who/What Is Like God?

Isaiah 46:9; “Remember what happened long ago, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and no one is like Me.”

A bicycle and a sports car have very little in common.  They both have wheels and can get you from one place to the other faster than walking.  Yet, who could mistake one for the other?

In earlier verses, Isaiah talks about idols.  Of course anything or anyone can be an idol.  In fact, anything, any person, or philosophy that we give more attention to, or place more importance on then God, is an idol to us.

We look to idols for meaning, sense of security, pride of accomplishment, peace and the list goes on.  But think about what God offers.  God alone can provide salvation, grace, eternal hope, peace that no one can take away, calm, meaning and purpose in life.  Only God can transport a human spirit to heaven when the body dies.  Everything else we put ultimate trust and hope in will sooner or later let us down.

Even a bicycle and a sports car have more in common than an idol and God.   No idol can begin to compare to God.  There is none like God.

Lord, I remember the times that you have provided for me in amazing ways and give you thanks and praise.  There is none like you!  Amen.
